The Design Study has now ended

The EISCAT_3D design study ran as a Specific Support Action under the Framework Programme 6 initiative (EU contract no: 011920, project acronym: EISCAT_3D).

The project started 2005-05-01 and ended 2009-04-30.

The total project cost amounted to 2605 k€ (budget 2882 k€) whereof EU paid 1963 k€ (budget 2017 k€) .

The project used 364 staff-months (budget 368 staff-months) from the participants. This corresponds to about 8 person-years per year during the four year project.

The design study background and summarised findings can be found here.

EISCAT_3D Frequency Allocation update

EISCAT_3D added to the ESFRI Roadmap

A radically new Atmospheric and Space Environment facility was included in the first major revision of the ESFRI RoadMap announced at the European Committee on Research Infrastructures (ECRI), held in Versailles December 2008.

The new Research Infrastructure (working title ‘EISCAT_3D: The next generation European incoherent scatter radar system’) is one of 9 new Infrastructures added to the 35 in the initial RoadMap. All these are major facilities seen to be of strategic importance to the future of European science and technology.

EISCAT Council endorses EISCAT_3D

31 October 2008, Kunming, China
The EISCAT Council issues the following statement: In the light of its discussion of EISCAT's long-term science aims, and reaffirming the science strategy which it already formulated in 2006, EISCAT Council resolves that the development of new radar facilities capable of three-dimensional volumetric imaging of the atmosphere and ionosphere is an essential requirement for the future of the association, since this satisfies user demands for deeper insights into applications such as middle atmosphere science, multi-scale coupling, electrodynamics, meteors and space debris studies.
